The Library and Museum of Freemasonry defines a daughter Lodge as: A new Lodge formed by a group of not less than seven Master Masons petitioning the Grand Master to do so. Each such petition must be supported by a recommendation from another Lodge (the Mother Lodge). In this way Lodges can establish a “daughter” lodge and family trees of lodges are developed.
Deputy Provincial Grand Master
As the name suggested, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master is the Provincial Grand Master's immediate subordinate.
Entered Apprentice
The entry level rank or 'First Degree' in basic Freemasonry. All newly initiated Freemasons are referred to as an Entered Apprentice.
Fellow Craft
The second level rank or 'Second Degree' in basic Freemasonry. After a progressive ceremony, an Entered Apprentice moves up to the second level rank of Fellow Craft.
Festive Board
The dinner after a formal or Regular Lodge Meeting. During the Festive Board we usually propose toasts and there are normally a few short speeches.
Founding Master
When a new Masonic Lodge is consecrated, the initial members are referred to as the 'Founding Members'. The first Worshipful Master of the Lodge is referred to as the Founding Master, sometimes called the 'Primus Master'.
Referred to as the 'Most Worshipful Grand Master' and is a Freemason elected to oversee a Masonic jurisdiction. The current Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England is HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, who has been the Grand Master since his election in 1967.
Initiation
The ceremony by which you first become a Freemason.
Installation
Each year, at the Installation Meeting, the 'Master Elect' is 'installed' as Master by his predecessor and takes over the ruling and governing of a Lodge. During this ceremony the new Worshipful Master appoints officers to assist him through his year as Master of the Lodge. A Freemason is not restricted in the number times he can act as Worshipful Master, either in one Lodge or a number of different Lodges.
Master Mason
The third level rank or 'Third Degree' in basic Freemasonry. After a progressive ceremony, a Fellow Craft moves up to the third level rank of Master Mason.
Past Master
As the phrase suggests, a Past Master is a Freemason who has acted as the Worshipful Master of a Lodge.
Past Masters Jewel
At the end of a Freemasons term as Worshipful Master, the Lodge will present him with a Past Masters Jewel in recognition of his work in that role. It is similar in appearance to a military medal and is normally worn hanging from the left breast pocket of the suit jacket.
Pro Grand Master
In the United Grand Lodge of England, the Grand Master is traditionally a Prince of the Blood Royal (that is, a member of the Royal Family), if this is so then he may appoint a 'Pro Grand Master' ('Pro' is from the Latin for 'For') to be "his principal adviser, and to act for him on those occasions when, due to royal engagements, he is unable to be present". The position of Pro Grand Master should not be mistake with that of the Deputy Grand Master, the two are distinctly separate.
Province
A Masonic subdivision of the UK, each Province having a Provincial Grand Lodge led by a Provincial Grand Master. The Provincial Grand Lodge is the administrative body for the Lodges within that Province. Provinces, with a few exceptions, generally follow county boundaries and Hope Lodge lies within the Masonic Province of Berkshire.
Provincial
Of or belonging to a 'Province'. See above.
Provincial Grand Lodge
The senior Lodge in a Province and the administrative centre for the Lodges within that Province. The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master presides over a Provincial Grand Lodge.
Provincial Grand Master
The Provincial Grand Master is the elected head of a Masonic Province or District.
Provincial Grand Secretary
As the name suggests, the Secretary of a Provincial Grand Lodge.
Right Worshipful Brother
This term designates a Brother elected to a Grand Lodge Office.
Royal Arch Chapter
The Royal Arch is the continuation of Craft Freemasonry. Its members, called Companions, meet in Chapters under a Grand Chapter. Chapters are ruled over by three Principals, who rule conjointly.
Summons
The official document sent by the Lodge Secretary to all Lodge members informing the membership of the date and running order of the next formal or Regular Meeting of their Lodge.
Supreme Being
Freemasonry is open to all faiths and it is necessary for all potential Freemasons, regardless of faith, to acknowledge their continued belief in a deity. As Freemasons we refer to this deity as a Supreme Being so as not to be faith specific.
Tyler
The office of Tyler of the Lodge is an important position. He is situated immediately outside the door of the Lodge.
UGLE
An acronym for the 'United Grand Lodge of England' - The governing body of Freemasonry in England, Wales, the Isle of Man & the Channel Islands; Grand Lodge is led by the Grand Master.
